Sundance Power Systems spotlights Green Acres

August 2, 2013 by bm-admin

Green Acres was featured in Sundance Power System’s May Newsletter:

sundance_green-acresResidential Spotlight: Green Acres

In the rolling hills of Southeast Asheville, a 23 acre haven fittingly named “Green Acres” is being cultivated by John McDermott, an extremely talented individual with a grand vision to create a net zero energy community. After just a few short years of embarking on this venture, the second home on the property is receiving detail touches, plantings of fruits and berries are becoming established, and a distinctive artistic spirit is permeating the land.

John, a Mechanical Engineer, served as the Architect and Builder for the contemporary, energy efficient homes, as well as a studio/workshop for Bola Design, his furniture- making enterprise. On his website, it states that his emphasis as a woodworker is on “design that is visually compelling, spiritually alive, and functionally sound,” and this tone is seen in his whole buildings as well.  Meticulously crafted from locally sourced wood, which John mills and dries, his unique pieces reflect his engineering background in their solid construction, and radiate refined artistic craftsmanship. (John studied furniture design at the post-graduate level at San Diego State University.) And less visible, but equally significant, is an underlying ethic of environmental stewardship and respect for the land that John carries throughout his endeavors.
